The customer

RWZ is the third largest agricultural cooperative in Germany, based in Mainz. It employs more than 3,300 people at over 200 locations through 17 subsidiary companies, serving large parts of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, Thuringia and Saxony as well as the Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland.

RWZ operates via approximately 170 member cooperatives and almost 70,000 farmers, growers and gardeners, across product lines ranging from plants, commodities and animal husbandry to farm equipment, fuel, logistics services, building materials and energy management, generating revenue of approximately 2.5 billion euro annually.

The challenge

  • Rapid business growth
  • Many retail locations spread out geographically
  • Many workers not tied to a specific store or warehouse, switching places frequently

What that meant in practice:

  • Eliminate the delays caused by repeated logging in and out of SAP
  • Allow rapid employee rotation between stores or cash registers
  • Create indisputable user accountability

What was implemented

  • Mandatory biometric access control for any combination of 300 cash registers, over 200 locations and 800+ cashiers
  • Secure access to SAP transaction VA01, creating a sales order, at the individual cashier and cash register level
  • Generic SAP profiles created, with individual biometric user profiles associated to them
  • Logged biometric cashier re-authentication for each sale
  • An automatic audit trail generated for every cash register transaction

The outcome

  • True identity management for cashiers, with complete flexibility of workplace and register rotation
  • Access to unattended cash registers by unauthorised users prevented
  • A robust, tamper-proof audit trail in effect
  • Reconciliation of register sales activity by individual cashier and transaction back to SAP ERP financials
